Tutorial - Colouring on Kraft paper with Prismacolor pencils

aHi Guys,

I thought for my Quixotic Paperie post today I would show you a simple tutorial on colouring on Kraft paper with prismacolor pencils.

Now be gentle with me.......this is my first time doing a  colouring tutorial on my blog! I also feel that it might be improved by doing a video rather than a series of pictures but bear with me and I might get brave enough to do that one day!!

So I used as my image the 'Little Dreamer' from The Greeting Farm available from Quixotic Paperie.

Now colouring with pencils on Kraft gives a very vibrant colour and leaves a soft effect almost like using pastels. I rarely use Mineral Spirits for blending when working on Kraft. Instead I use my lightest pencil to do the blending work for me. I will explain as I go along!

 Step 1:
Stamp your image onto Kraft paper/card stock.  I like to begin with colouring with my lightest colour pencil. That is simply my preference. I feel that more colour can always be added....but it is much harder to take it away!  I am risk averse...so I start with the colour that is least likely to go wrong! So for this image I started with 'Beige' and coloured where I thought the highlights in her hair would land. In this instance I chose my light source to be coming directly at the back of her hair...not from the side. Don't forget to add little highlights with the 'Beige' on her pig tails!

 Step 2:
I took the darkest brown colour for her hair 'Dark Umber' and then added where the deepest shadows would fall on her hair

 Step 3:
To blend the darkest and lightest browns I took a middle shade of brown to blend them both together. I used 'Light Umber'. I blended with linear strokes (rather than circular) to give the hair some texture.  I did not want it to appear totally smooth.

 Step 4:
Finally for the last step in colouring the hair I took the 'Black' pencil and added a small amount to the very darkest places of her hair, for example, the parting of her hair and where the pigtails begin.

 Step 5:
I wanted to give her some ground to sit on so I used 3 shades of 'Cool Grey' to achieve this. I started with the lightest 'Cool Grey'. I then added a smaller amount of 'Cool Grey 70%', then finally just under her bottom where she is sitting I added the darkest shade of  'Cool Grey 90%'.

 Step 6:
  We are now going to add the reds for the strawberry and her hair bow and her skirt. I picked out 3 shades again to work with ; Blush Pink, Scarlet Lake, Tuscan Red (shown in the corner of the photo).  Add your pink  (lightest shade) first to the areas that would be lightest, the centre of the strawberry, the tips of the hair bows and the sections of her skirt. Then add the Scarlet Lake and finally the Tuscan Red to the deepest shadows. Blend them all togther with your lightest shade: Blush Pink. Go back and add more shadows to the darkest areas if you feel it is necessary.

 

Step 7: Finally colour the reamining areas of the image with your 3 brown shades that we used for the hair : Beige, Light Umber and Dark Umber. Start with the lighest colour and add to the centre of the rucksack, then add the Dark Umber to the edges of the rucksack and finally blend them all together with your mid brown colour.

Hanglar Birthday Card

Happy Tuesday! Well today is a dull dreich day up here ....roll on spring I say!

Today I have a card to show you that I created for an Etsy customer. She wanted a birthday card for her neice. So I thought what better excuse to break out the Hanglars!! I haven't had a chance to play with them for an age!

She is coloured with copics (I will post a list at the bottom of the post) and I used my new Oval Grand Nesties to cut her out. All but the largest dies fit onto my Big Shot. I am saving up for the Grand Circles...top of my wish list!

The papers I picked up on Saturday up at Simply Create. They are the new Bo Bunny collection and have fast become my favourites. So watch out for some more peach and turquoise colour combos!! I ahve used a little peach seam binding for a bow with a little button attatched to the top of it.

I took a little trip out to Simply Create to watch Kath play with the new Hero Arts collection for 2011. Well it was mobbed and Kirsti, Sonja and I didn't get a peek at her cards until she had finished demo-ing!! so we had fun chilling out on the sofa chatting to Jacqui instead ! It was such a lovely afternoon and I so enjoyed meeting up with the girls and mooching around Simply Create!! here is to the next one!!

Quixotic Paperie - Winter Friends

Hiya folks! It is Friday! Are you all looking forward to the weekend?

I know I am !

But back to today...Friday is going to be my regular day for showcasing some of the lovely products available at Quixotic Paperie. And if I am feeling brave I might even have a wee tutorial here and there!

So onto the card. I have used the beautiful image by Elisabeth Bell from SCACD. called 'Winter Friends'. The image is coloured with copics and a generous amount of stickles :). The papers I have used are  from Marianne Design and are called 'In the Meadow'.  The arrangement of flowers is a mixture from Wild Orchid Crafts and Prima flowers. The little pearl spray is available here. I always like to add that to my little flower bunches :)

Sugar Nellie - 'In a While'

Morning folks! I am back as promised with a brand new image from Leanne Ellis. I do love these arty designs. It is really nice to do something other than cute.

Thought I do have to admit this card has been on my desk for days. I have had real trouble with getting it to all come together. Even now I am not convinced...but I needed closure ..LOL! I need to get it off my desk and moved on. Mayber it is the colours I picked or something!

The image is called 'In a While' and is coloured with copics. I have used lots of greys for the hair and for the dress. And the ruffle round her neck is from the YR colour group (YROOO, YR21, YR24, E08)

 So the papers I used are from Pink Paislee and then I made the flowers from a tutorial I found here from Mandy. Thank you!! I love making my own flowers when I can.  The film strip ribbon is from Tim Holtz and can be found at Quixotic Paperie.


There are 5 other new Leanne Ellis stamps in this collection which I think are all stunningly beautiful!

Mi Casa @ Simply Create

Hiya girlies,

I just wanted to pop on and show you the complete cards that I gave a peek of the other day. These are the cards I made for the class at Simply Create on Saturday.

It was a lovely class and it was great to meet the lovely girls, Fiona, Jen and Linda from Ellon, who if you are looking for them, you will find them on the Sugar Nellie Facebook page! And also lovely to see some regular faces back: Mary, Susan, Elaine! They were very kind to me and not too rowdy! I hope you enjoyed it girls!

It was also an unexpected pleasure to have my Mum join in with the class. My folks were down staying for the weekend and my Mum said she would like to come along. She has listened to me and my sisters talk about card making for years now and now she may have gotten the bug too!

These cards were all made with the Hero Arts set called 'Mi Casa' and all the images were coloured with prismacolour pencils. NO patterned paper was used on these cards. I created some interest on the cardstock by stamping with the Hero Arts 'Flourish' background.

 We added a little faux stitching round the edges and a few pearls to the chimney on the house.

For those of you who haven't visited yet Jacqui's new shop is just splendid. It is very roomy and had loads of wonderful new stock...including lots of the new 2011 Hero Arts.

Sugar Nellie - 'Faith'

Morning my lovelies! How is life with you then?

We are in the midst of getting a loft conversion done so I although I am excited about it, it also means a lot of noise and mess. It also means that when it is all done I will be getting a little crafty space of my own. Wooo Hooo! So it is very small so I need to plan it carefully!

Anyway today I wanted to share with you another of the new 'Simply Adorables' from Sugar Nellie. Now I know I said this in my last post but they really are so simple to colour. So if you feel that you are 'colouring' challenged then these are definitely worth a try. The shading detail is pretty much done for you....so whatever colouring medium you are using, it really is a doddle!

This image is called 'Faith' and is available in both rubber and dig format! She is coloured with copics for the skin tones and all the rest is done with prisma pencils.
The papers are really old ones I have in my stash from 'Lily Bee' with a little bit of machine stitching added to the matting. The sentiment on the tag is from Hero Arts.

Simply Create - Mi Casa

Morning Ladies,

Just a little sneak peek of the cards we will be making at my class this Saturday at Simply Create. I am very excited as this is my first class in the brand new premises  (49 Main Street, Alford)  which has a little classroom at the rear of the shop. Another reason to be excited about this class is that I am using stamps from a company that I do not normally work with :)

So lots of new things for me!

I think there are a few spaces still left for Saturday, so if you are around in the Aberdeenshire area, it would be great to see you there. The class begins at 1:30 and will run for a couple of hours. You are guaranteed some good company and hopefully learn some prisma colouring techniques and a browse around the best craft shop in the Aberdeenshire area !

Quixotic Paperie - 'Bench Friends'

Well I am  glad to be online again! We had a nasty virus that took over our computer and kept flashing very unsuitable images up all the time. So it had to be dealt with very swiftly!

Thankfully they have all now gone! It is quite scary when you think something is just taking over and controlling your PC and all our anti-virus software was totally up to date as well.

Anyway onto some good news...I am now back with Quixotic Paperie DT after taking a little break. Yeah!!! I will be posting a card a week to showcase Quixotic products and the DT will also be doing little mini-tutorials on their blog also. So lots of exciting things to come!

This card is a stamp that Elaine sent me well before Christmas that I did not have a chance to use. It is called 'Bench Friends' and is by Kraftin' Kimmie, available in the UK from Quixotic Paperie. This gorgeous stamp also comes with the matching sentiment which I made into a tag.

The image is coloured with prisma pencils entirely, then with a little machine stitching added and a magnolia flourish die. The papers are 'Ella Blue' by GCD Studios.

Simply Adorables - Verity

Happy New Year and I hope 2011 is a very happy one for you all!

As promised I am back with a little look at the new 'Simply Adorables' about to hit Sugar Nellie VERY soon!!

This one is called 'Verity'. These images are very different to many others out in the market. They are beautifully and exquisitely illustrated  and are especially perfect for those of you who are less confident in your colouring. A lot of the shading is already in place in the illustration so a lot of the thinking work is done for you. You still need to apply blending techniques to make it all smooth from one shade to the next. I coloured this one with pencils as I felt the image lent itself to softer tones.

 The papers I have used are all Tim Holtz 'Vintage Shabby' and have been distressed around the edges then stitched. The flower is one from a lovely friend. The metal corner is Tim Holtz as is the little mini paperclip holding the sentiment.

There are 4 of these girls in the range and they come with either their whole bodies like in the one I have just shown you or just a head shot. Funky Kits is open again for business on the 5th January.....so keep your eyes peeled!
